Disability Confident LIVE

Trainer-led course content

Course Summary
Disability Confident is a one-day programme aimed at employees at all levels, whether disabled or non-disabled.  In it we present basic information about physical, sensory, learning and other disabilities, and ask whether it is the condition which disables people or society’s attitudes and the built environment.  We explore the provisions of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995, including the responsibility to make reasonable adjustments.  And we enable delegates to reflect on attitudes to disabled people, and on the fears and misconceptions that lead to discriminatory behaviour.  We do this through participative exercises, case studies, experiential learning and discussion, encouraging delegates to apply learning to their own organisations.

What you will learn
• about different types of disability, the medical and social models of disability, and appropriate language
• to recognise and dispel myths and assumptions about disability
• how to communicate effectively with people who have certain types of disability
• how to avoid discriminating against and marginalising colleagues with disabilities
• to recognise and challenge harassment on the grounds of disability
• to recognise your own disability rights at work
• the basics of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (DDA)

Relevant audiences will also be able to explore;
• recruiting the right person for the job regardless of disability
• ensuring that pay, terms and conditions, training, promotion, dismissal and provision of references are non-discriminatory on grounds of disability
