New training resource helps employers address issues around religion and belief in order to build a more inclusive workplace.

Skill Boosters, in association with FaithWise, have launched a video training package entitled ‘Religion and Belief: respecting and accommodating faith and belief in the workplace’.

There is much discrimination on the grounds of religion and belief in the workplace, as evidenced by a Home Office report in 2001* and recent case law (Copsey v WWB Devon Clays Ltd, Khan v NIC Hygiene and Mohmed v Virgin Trains).  With the introduction of the Employment Equality (Religion or Belief) Regulations 2003, this discrimination is now against the law. The ‘Religion and Belief’ resource will help organisations tackle this discrimination resulting in improved morale, performance, staff retention levels and the reduced risk of legal claims.

Through an engaging blend of documentary, powerful drama and real life experiences, this DVD/VHS resource along with the accompanying trainer’s notes/self-study guide:

• Provides organisations with a tool for raising awareness amongst staff about the most widely practiced religions in the UK.

• Illustrates the types of adjustments that can be made to accommodate different faith groups at work.

• Illustrates the types of behaviours that could be deemed to be discrimination, harassment and victimisation, in a range of contexts including recruitment and selection and workplace banter.

• Looks at the impact of people trying to impose their own beliefs on others.
Mohammed Aziz, Director of FaithWise, a leading consultancy on faith communities and issues in the UK, commented “Discrimination, harassment and victimisation on the grounds of religion or belief hurt individuals, hurt businesses and hurt society. The outlawing of discrimination and the accommodation of religion and belief at work can only result in better performance and productivity, and ultimately a better economy and society. Organisations will learn from this effective new resource how, by actively engaging with the religion and belief needs of their staff, they can benefit everyone – their staff, their customers and themselves.”
