New training resource helps employers address issues around sexual orientation in order to build a more inclusive workplace.

Skill Boosters and Stonewall have launched a video training package entitled ‘Sexual Orientation: respecting lesbian, gay and bisexual people in the workplace’.

Too few organisations recognise that sexual orientation is a key aspect of diversity or what this means to their business; over one in twenty people are lesbian, gay or bisexual and the ‘pink pound’ is worth up to an estimated £10 billion per year.

This resource contains an engaging blend of documentary, powerful drama and real-life experiences.  It will enable organisations to successfully embrace this sensitive area which will bring huge benefits to their business and people.

The training package will help managers and staff to:

• Recognise how to behave appropriately to lesbian and gay people; to treat everyone with respect and dignity in order to create a pleasant working atmosphere and boost morale and performance.

• Respect confidentiality. It should be understood that many gay people choose not to be out at work; it might not always be obvious but most of us will have LGB people as colleagues and customers.

• Understand the law so as to avoid costly legal cases and potential brand damage.

Stephen Frost, Manager of the Diversity Champions programme at Stonewall, the UK’s leading gay equality organisation commented, “6% of the population is lesbian, gay or bisexual.  In this context, employers are learning that it’s about moving beyond mere compliance with employment regulations and instead actively engaging with lesbian and gay staff in order to build reputation, enhance productivity and avoid risk.  It makes no business sense to do otherwise.”
